Essential fatty acids

Essential fatty acids are vital in metabolism, formation of cell walls and tissue repair. They play an important role in maintaining the health of the heart, liver and brain. Since the body cannot manufacture EFAs, they must come from the diet. The most common supplemental sources of essential fatty acids are fish oils, but for those wishing to avoid fish products there are other oils, such as flaxseed, borage seed and evening primrose oil, these are are rich sources of essential fatty acids.
There are 2 types of essential fatty acids

  • Omega-3, which are derived from linolenic acid - found in flaxseed oil, rapeseed oil, soya beans, walnuts, cod liver oil, herring, sardines, mackerel.
  • Omega-6, which is derived from linoleic and archidonic acids - sourced from olive, sunflower, corn oil, evening primrose, starflower oil (borage).

A deficiency of EFAs can result in dry skin, allergies, skin conditions such as psoriasis, PMS, menopause, poor hair and nails.
